Fishing is a popular activity in the Whitsundays. It’s a great way to relax on the water and have fun with friends. Some parts of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park are protected as green zones. These are ‘no take’ areas, which means fishing and collecting marine life are not allowed. It’s important to know and follow the fishing rules while on your bareboat charter around the Whitsunday Islands.
You don’t need a fishing license, but you must be aware of where you are within the Marine Park. Make sure you know the fishing rules for each zone.
Marine Park Zoning
Zoning helps protect the reef and keeps it healthy for future generations. For convenience, download the free ‘Eye on the Reef’ app from the iTunes or Google Play store. The app gives you access to zoning maps and lets you check which zone you’re in. It works even when you don’t have mobile reception. You can also report sightings and see the rules for each zone. For more details, visit the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority website. (Note: Some areas in the Whitsundays may have limited mobile reception.)
Fishing Kit Hire
You can bring your own fishing gear, or you can hire it from us for $25p/d.
Just place your order at the Charter Centre when booking, and we’ll deliver the gear to your boat.

Fishing Closures
Fishing closures for spawning aggregation are in place to protect coral reef fin fish species on the Great Barrier Reef. During these times, fishing for certain reef fish is strictly prohibited, and significant fines apply for non-compliance.
However, fishing for game fish species is still allowed during these closures. Before casting a line for any coral reef fin fish, make sure to check the latest regulations and closure dates on the Queensland Government Department of Agriculture and Fisheries website.
Staying informed ensures a sustainable fishing experience while helping to protect the reef’s vibrant marine life for future generations.
