Cumberland Charter Yachts Recognised as a Green Travel Leader by Ecotourism Australia

Cumberland Charter Yachts has been formally recognised as a Green Travel Leader by Ecotourism Australia, celebrating 10 years of ECO Certification and a decade of commitment to sustainable tourism in the Whitsundays.

This honour acknowledges the company’s long-standing dedication to environmental best practice, cultural respect, and delivering high-quality, low-impact experiences in one of Australia’s most iconic marine destinations—the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

Elissa Keenan, CEO of Ecotourism Australia, said Green Travel Leaders set the benchmark for responsible tourism. “Our Green Travel Leaders have demonstrated a decade of passion and consistency,” Ms. Keenan said.

“Their work continues to raise the bar in delivering tourism experiences that are environmentally responsible and culturally respectful”

As a 100% locally owned and operated company, Cumberland Charter Yachts has pioneered sustainable bareboating in the region, offering travellers the opportunity to explore the Whitsunday Islands at their own pace while treading lightly on the environment.

General Manager / Partner Simon Summerton said the recognition aligns with the company’s deeply held values. “To be acknowledged as a Green Travel Leader is a proud moment for our entire team,” he said. “For over four decades, we’ve worked to ensure our guests not only enjoy the beauty of the Whitsundays but also understand the importance of protecting it.”

“From investing in sustainable systems on our vessels, to educating guests about marine park zoning and reef-friendly practices, sustainability is embedded into everything we do.”

Cumberland Charter Yachts’ ECO Certification is not just a badge—it’s a commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and accountability in marine tourism. The company continues to collaborate with local environmental organisations, Traditional Owners, and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to ensure their operations remain respectful and regenerative.

As one of just 13 operators nationally inducted as Green Travel Leaders in 2025, Cumberland Charter Yachts joins an elite group helping shape the future of ecotourism in Australia.

All certified operators can be found on Ecotourism Australia’s Green Travel Guide, helping conscious travellers discover over 2,000 certified and sustainable experiences across the country.
